Are You Low in Vitamin D?

Low Vitamin D is becoming so common that they are now finding low levels on kids as well as people who are out in the sun.  Its not surprising to hear this because of all the worry about skin cancer and using sunscreen as well as not eating a balanced diet.

In case you are not familiar with this lovely vitamin, here is the scoop!

There are two levels of vitamin D deficiency, also called hypovitaminosis. There is severe vitamin D deficiency and then there is a less obvious problem of Low Vitamin D.

In severe Vitamin D deficiency its called Rickets in children and Osteomalacia in adults which is softening of the bones but before it gets to that level there are a few obvious symptoms besides bone pain and muscle weakness, these symptoms are extremely common and since they can be caused by many other problems they are often overlooked by doctors.

This chronic pain should make health care providers always suspect symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency!

Low Vitamin D is so subtle you won't even know you are low until you have the blood test. Some of the first symptoms of Low Vit D could be:

Colds and Flu

Periodontal Disease and Cavities
Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder
Osteoporosis
Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy
High Blood Pressure
Lung Cancer
Ovarian Cancer
Colon Cancer
Breast Cancer
Asthma
Multiple Sclerosis
Chronic Pain
Fibromyalgia
Arthritis
Many Autoimmune Diseases
PMS

While these are complicated and serious diseases and obviously other factors are involved, one common risk factor for all of these is a low vitamin D level! While the low levels of Vitamin D found in these diseases doesn't necessarily mean they cause these diseases, it does make one wonder what the relationship is!

The American Society of Anesthesiologists released a report ithat stated approximately one in 4 patients who have chronic pain issues were also found to have low levels of vitamin D. I find this very interesting.

This vitamin does a lot more than promoting bone formation, did you know that it also regulates parathyroid hormone secretion from the parathyroid gland? This allows the body to maintain normal calcium levels to allow the nervous and muscular systems to function properly.

So, you may be wondering what the blood test is called, you have to ask for it since it is not on your regular CBC or Chem panel. It’s called The 25- hydoxy Vitamin D test. I highly recommend getting this test done because you never know.  After all its only a vitamin if you are deficient, so that means supplementing with vitamin D or better yet, get out in the sun for 10-15 a day!

To your health!

Trusting the Process

In the beginning of September I decided to be in a 30 day online challenge group for  Body Beast  and  Shakeology .  I had never been in a challenge group before so I wanted to have that experience, plus it looked like fun!  At first I was a little nervous and overwhelmed because as part of this challenge group we were to post a daily picture of our shakeology, one of our meals,  which workout we did and a sweaty post workout selfie.  Eek…I never take selfies much less pictures!  Then there was the fear of everyone seeing it that wasn’t in the group. I have a hard time putting myself out there and this year has been one of pushing me to step outside of my comfort zone with everything and that is a good thing.  The first 2 weeks I kept thinking I needed to do more cardio, so I added one extra day of cardio (Max 30) Everyone kept saying to “trust the process” so I am trusting the process and sticking to my one extra day of cardio.  Well...

What is Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN)

W hat is Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN)?  FDN is a type of detective work that seeks to identify the underlying causes of disease instead of treating symptoms. Stop Chasing Symptoms and Get to The Root Cause! I understand that symptoms must be addressed. You want relief, but you also want to know why you have symptoms and resolve their cause. My approach is to assess underlying function and discover the underlying causes of your health problems. This approach leads to long-term resolution of symptoms, not just temporary relief. Lab Testing   is a great way to   discover hidden internal stressors that are at the root cause of your symptoms . As a FDN Practitioner, I use non-invasive laboratory tests to find hidden internal stressors and their root causes. With this step-by-step method I can assess the functions and pathways of the Hormone, Immune, Digestion, and Detoxification systems. Basically, everything we need to have running smoothly for op...

Why Vegetable Oils are Unhealthy

This keeps coming up and I have to share this! Let’s talk vegetable oils. In case you didn’t know- vegetable oils are bad. Bad for your health and bad for the environment. First- these do not come from vegetables! These are oils that have been extracted from various seeds. The most common include rapeseed (canola oil), soybean, corn, sunflower, safflower, and peanut. Unlike coconut oil or olive oil that can be extracted by pressing, these oils have to be extracted in very unnatural ways. Cholesterol and saturated fat are essential to good health. Even now, despite the fact that heart disease, cancer and diabetes rise at an alarming rate while butter consumption is down, vegetable oil consumption is at an all time high. People are still believing the hype and buying this non-healthy food like product.   I have to share this just so you can see how these oils are made! Step 1:  Find some “canola seeds.” Oh wait, they don’t exist. Canola oil is actually made from a...
