Why Vegetable Oils are Unhealthy

This keeps coming up and I have to share this! Let’s talk vegetable oils. In case you didn’t know- vegetable oils are bad. Bad for your health and bad for the environment. First- these do not come from vegetables! These are oils that have been extracted from various seeds. The most common include rapeseed (canola oil), soybean, corn, sunflower, safflower, and peanut. Unlike coconut oil or olive oil that can be extracted by pressing, these oils have to be extracted in very unnatural ways. Cholesterol and saturated fat are essential to good health. Even now, despite the fact that heart disease, cancer and diabetes rise at an alarming rate while butter consumption is down, vegetable oil consumption is at an all time high. People are still believing the hype and buying this non-healthy food like product.   I have to share this just so you can see how these oils are made! Step 1:  Find some “canola seeds.” Oh wait, they don’t exist. Canola oil is actually made from a...

Obsessed With This Lifestyle!

I can’t believe that there are only 2 weeks left in my 80 Day Obsession journey. I don’t want it to end! First off, I have to say I started this journey because I wanted and needed a change and that is exactly what I got but not in the way you may think! Yes there are some changes in my body- my clothes fit different and some are too big in areas but I weigh the same. At first I thought I was losing too much weight until I weighed myself then realized my body composition just changed. This just goes to show you that you can’t go by that number on the scale, in fact I do not own a scale. I am so much stronger now and can get through the workouts better. And did you know that strength training helps to balance out hormones as well as protects against osteoporosis? I also love that self care is talked about so much during the program and how important it is. When we get busy it’s the last thing we think to do but it should be the first thing we do. The workouts are challenging and some...

Obsessed....My New Journey

In the beginning of this year I decided I needed to change things up and take my fitness and health to the next level. I was in a rut and needed change. I had been doing the same workouts mixing it up here and there but was bored. I wasn’t excited about my workouts anymore and I hit a plateau.  My goal has always been to gain more muscle mass but I have not achieved that with how I had been doing things (truth be told- I wasn’t following the other programs as I should have with the nutrition and I needed to buy heavier weights which I finally did)  I have always eaten clean but knew in the back of my head I could do better. So, when this awesome opportunity for the online test group came up I knew I had to jump on it!   I am sharing my experience of phase 1 which is the first 4 weeks- 26 days! First off, this program is for 80 days broken down into 3 phases- I know that sounds like a long time but reality is, this is a lifestyle not something you do and then...

keep your vibe high during the holidays!

The holidays are fast approaching and with that usually comes some kind of stress, but it doesn't have to be that way this year!  Stress is a part of life but how you deal with it is what really matters. It’s important to listen to your body and pay attention to the warning signs of being under stress. Stress over a prolonged period of time leads to a number of health issues all of which can be avoided especially during the holidays! Let’s end the year feeling energized and ready to tackle the New Year with our vibes high! Here are 5 things you can start implementing now to help you feel less stress and more energy! 1. Eat all day long- spread your daily calories over five or six small meals. When cortisol levels are high or depleted the body needs fuel. Eat protein and healthy fats with every meal.  We need those fats to make hormones- when cortisol is out of balance our hormones become depleted. Some options for healthy fats: avocado, nuts, coconut o...

Healing Leaky Gut

T odays post was inspired by all the questions I keep getting regarding gut health and how to heal the gut. After going through my Functional Diagnostic Nutrition program and learning about health in a whole new way I learned how important it is to test not guess when it comes to health issues.  In FDN we run functional lab work to get to the root cause of health issues.  It may not be what you think and almost always it leads us back to the gut. Did you know that 70-80% of our immune system is found in the gut? I would have never guessed that.  When I ran labs on myself for part of the course I discovered that all my labs pointed to gut issues.  When I went in to doing the labs I was pretty confident- cocky to be exact that my labs were going to be really good because I ate clean, exercised and didn’t have many health complaints, I had no problem sleeping, my weight was ideal, yes I was tired but figured it was from working too much well that is not what my la...

Aging Gracefully

One of the questions I get asked a lot is do you work out? I have to admit I love that because it makes me feel good that people notice.  Then come all the questions about what kind of workouts I do. When I mention strength training most people think they don't need to do that...that they need to do cardio in order to lose weight.  They couldn’t be more wrong and here is why!   Strength training builds muscle and increases your metabolism but did you know that it does much more for you as far as your health goes? * Weights improve immunity  - Immune strength depends on the availability of the amino acid glutamine. Your muscles have to supply the glutamine to your immune system in order for it to work. Therefore the more muscle you have the more abundant the glutamine supply, and the better your immune system works and helps fight free radicals! * Weights develop strong bones  - By stressing your bones, strength training increases bone density and reduces...
